of the teller and the text is framed with an elaborate filigree pattern of loops, scrolls, flowers, and stars. In other words, the Ellesmere is more than a work
of literature, it is also a work of art. This magnificent manuscript of Chaucers Tales contains twenty-three portraits of the storytellers, including one of Chaucer (New...Facsimile). There are seventy-one pages
decorated with gold and luminously colored borders, which give a "special opulence" to the presentation of Chaucers classic stories (New...Facsimile). For example, the page that begins the Wife of Baths
Tale pictures her astride her horse to the right of the text. She is depicted in bright colors, as indicated by Chaucers description. Along the left-hand side of the
