by what is referred to as the cardiac conduction system, an electrical system that in itself is composed of three distinct parts. These parts are: 1. the sinoatrial node, 2. the atrioventricular node, and 3. the His-Purkinje system (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2009). It is through the interaction of these three parts that our heart beats and pumps the blood to the other organs in our body. While we may think of it as one of the most simplistic aspects of our physiology, our heart beat is actually quite complex. It is a two-part phenomena of our heart chambers relaxing and then contracting that composes one single cycle (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2009). Concurrent to the contraction and relaxation is the opening and closing of the valves in our left ventricle. There are, of course, both inlet valves and outlet valves in our left ventricle and these must be opened and closed in the proper sequence in order for the blood to pass through uninhibited. Each heartbeat is composed of a diastole and atrial and ventricular systole (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2009). The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (2009) clarifies that our hearts atria and ventricles relax during diastole and start filling with blood but at the end of diastole your hearts "atria contract (atrial systole), pumping blood into the ventricles, and then begin to relax" and the "ventricles then contract (ventricular systole), pumping blood out of your heart". This whole process, of course, is set off by an electrical signal within the sino-atrial node (the ...
