instance, some aspects of personality have been attributed to genetic factors, others to environmental influences, and still others to a combination of the two. Personality is unique to each individual, but it is fair to state that several individuals may be said to have similar personalities, and this can sometimes be accounted for by similarities in genetic make-up or in upbringing, or a mixture of both. The role of genetics in influencing the development of personality characteristics is indirect: hormonal factors, for instance, may have behavioral consequences and the development of the endocrine system which manufactures hormones is contingent on genetic factors. However, it would not be accurate to state that the only factor which contributes to our behavioral patterns is hormonal, even though it may be of greater weight in some individuals than in others. Even so, the way in which very small infants demonstrate differences from one another in their behavior shows that there are innate differences between individuals which can be seen even before any significant external influences have been brought to bear on what might properly be called a personality. All mothers will notice the way in which their child, even at a few days old, will have different sleeping, feeding and crying patterns from others in the same maternity ward, even those who were born at the same time and who are very similar in terms of physical factors such as birth weight. In the same way, parents with more than one child in the family will notice differences between the behavior of siblings as each goes through the infant stage, which shows that even with the same genetic potential, babies will exhibit behavioral differences due to the ...
