In fact, because it had been so difficult for consumers to get their money back on cars that did not properly run, the lemon laws were created. Hence, in many circumstances, despite the fact that government wants to keep its hands off business, and allow free trade to take its course, regulation is sometimes necessary. There are in fact various theories about whether or not government should intervene in businesses and their right to freely conduct business without undue restriction. The free trade ideology suggests that businesses should have few restrictions and the market will regulate itself. This is the opinion of many Republicans for example. Democrats on the other hand are more concerned with consumer rights and the fact that historically, big business has not done well for the people. In fact, there are many regulations on automobiles in terms of safety and there are regulations for toy companies as well. Law suits are not enough to keep businesses in line. And in many industries, such as pharmaceuticals, results can prove fatal. That is why the industry is heavily regulated. These are just some examples and the Republican/Democrat dichotomy is a generalization. That said, the model provides a sense of where the people stand when it comes to regulation. In writing an introduction for a term paper, a student should be aware that sometimes a creative introduction will not necessarily address the subject at hand immediately.
