Conclusion Medical malpractice is an increasingly significant concern for surgeons, many of whom are finding insurance rates so excessive that it has been necessary to reevaluate their long-term outlook in the business of medicine. Exacerbating the problem has been growing numbers of slander and libel suits, many of which could be averted by making cameras a necessary component of operating procedures. In other words, the impact of having a visual record of all surgeries would result in the vastly decreased opportunity for physicians to use libel as a means of avoiding a malpractice suit. The fact is that technology is invading operating rooms in a myriad of ways, ranging from robots that perform surgeries to laparoscopic procedures that minimize incisions and greatly reduce the incidence of post-surgical infection (Weir, 2004). It therefore stands to reason that including cameras in the operating room would be not only technologically possible and appropriate, but legally advantageous as well.
