One can see that the field is quite broad, but all occupations do have a common denominator. Human services is first and foremost about caring for people. One example of a goal that a student might be interested in is a recreation worker position. Recreation is a field that is often seasonal and contains a vast amount of part-time and volunteer jobs as well ("Social and Recreation," 1998). It is for this reason that a student writing on this subject will want to consider such a choice very carefully. There are a variety of potential jobs in this area however and requirements will include a high school diploma but there are also possibilities for students with graduate degrees; such students can find suitable work in parks, perhaps in administrative positions (1998). Of course, these higher level positions will be few and far between. Another possibility in terms of career choice for a student writing on this subject is the human service assistant position ("Social and Recreation Workers: Social," 1998). The social and human service assistant niche is a growing occupational choice and while that is the case, the pay is relatively low (1998).
