The following paper examines the work The Black West by William Katz, a book that presents a look at the rich and diverse role played by Africans and African Americans in the history of the United States. The Black West by William Katz According to information pertained on a site wherein this book is available for sale, a Random House site, this book was essentially inspired by a conversation that William Katz had with Langston Hughes (Random House, 2008). While the reason, or the conversation is not mentioned, it appears as though he was likely inspired to do this work in light of the fact that in a discussion they had realized that nothing was really written on the history of black people as it related to the frontier of the United States, prior to the Civil War. In light of this one can also well argue that Katz thesis, his reason for writing the book, involved enlightening people about the history, the rich and diverse and influential history, of the African people in the United States. They were not simply slaves. They were not simply second rate human beings but have constantly played a very vital role in the history of the nation. In this work he speaks of many things and many individuals. He speaks of, perhaps quite importantly, of how many people simply envision the old West as being controlled and developed only by white Americans more than perhaps any other part of the nation.
