The problems which have erupted in the Biafran war in Nigeria are reflective of the deep problems which have plagued the country for centuries. Many of these problems relate to the European intrusion into the region, an intrusion which although it has been withdrawn has left the country impeded with a set of artificial boundaries and social constructs which have little to do with traditional Nigerian politics or culture (Winsbro, 2002). Indeed, the impact of European powers on Nigeria have been tremendous. This is true both in positive and negative terms. Nigeria has been the recipient of many positive benefits from Europe but her traditional cultures have been the target of aggressive missionaries and others with "good intentions" practically since the arrival of the first White to the country. The changes which have been incurred are reflected in practically every aspect of Nigerian culture and are, in fact, at the center of the atrocities which we have witnessed in events like the Biafran war. Partially as a result of the European insistence of conversion of the Nigerian people into something that they are not, Nigeria to this day is the site of tremendous ethnic conflict. The same can be said of other regions of Africa as well. Secretary-General Salim Ahmed Salim of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) stated in 1997: "For while Africa seems to be creeping out of the dark ages on several fronts, the economy included, the OAU is having to grapple with the atavistic resurgence of ethnic rivalry. . ."
