Essay / Research Paper Abstract

3 pages in length. Life on planet Earth has been a constant adaptation to environment based upon the fundamental properties of symmetry, appendages, behavior, nervous systems, light sensitivity and sensory perception, all of which work in tandem to create the malleable creatures who inhabit the planet. Living beings have a sense of proportion when it comes to their physiological composition, whether that is asymmetrical, bilateral, radial (starfish and jellyfish) or external/internal. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

create the malleable creatures who inhabit the planet. Living beings have a sense of proportion when it comes to their physiological composition, whether that is asymmetrical, bilateral, radial (starfish and jellyfish) or external/internal. Humans are bilateral because each side of a persons body is identical to the other; when examining the external/internal factor, however, people are not as symmetrically balanced on the inside as they are on the outside, with the kidneys and lungs standing out two of the primary obvious organs with matching pairs (Mullen, 1999). Appendages are not just arms and legs on human beings but represent all types of limbs, feelers and other body parts that extend from the main form. Cilia, for example, are ever-moving brush-like strands whose sweeping action helps to propel the animal. Others aid in securing animals to their perch with attachment pods, while some like tails are used for propulsion (Mullen, 1999). Nervous systems reflect another common denominator among the planets life forms with such distinct compositions as central nerve ring as in starfish, diffuse in humans and other invertebrates, and dorsal nerve cord of vertebrates (Mullen, 1999). The ability to move, eat, breathe, communicate and avoid death is all bound up in the behavioral aspect of lifes properties. A number of variables play integral roles in how life forms propel themselves and use locomotion, not the least of which includes pressure, gravity and the level of gas and/or fluid in the immediate environment. Metabolic components are responsible for breathing and eating, which the capacity to outwit predators is a function based within instinctual knowledge (Mullen, 1999). Communication is as vast as are the species who inhabit the planet. From man who formulates words to dolphins who have a distinctive trill to frogs ...
