The very basis of our human distinctiveness, our large and uniquely sophisticated brain, appears to demand that we maintain a high-quality, energy-rich diet. This appears to be confirmed by the fact that the human digestive tract is relatively short compared to most other primates (Beardsworth and Keil, 1996). There is little question that we need food, and that we need the right quality of food. But, given those boundaries/parameters, it is apparent that different cultures and societies have interpreted this biological need very differently. Food is associated with all that is important to people, from their cultures and their social differences to strengthening the special bonds they share (Counihan, 1997). And so, something that is so common to all also has very distinct differences between people (Counihan, 1997). Consider for instance the ways in which food serves to make gender distinctions, across all cultures and societies (Counihan, 1997). This is evidenced in both food habits and human behaviors (Counihan, 1997). More specifically, women of different cultures have come to have very different body image perceptions, which in turn has an effect on their food habits and choices (Counihan, 1997). American women have come to favor a slim, athletic body while women in various other cultures favor perhaps fuller figures, slimmer figures, etc. (Counihan, 1997).
