Obvious examples of social welfare include programs such as the socialized medicine that nearly all countries in the world have adopted, providing healthcare to individual people while subsidizing the cost with tax revenue. Another example, however, might be access to temporary financial benefits when one is without a job, or having access to grant money to gain access to higher education if one does not have sufficient resources to pay tuition costs on ones own. Whatever the case, there is no social welfare policy that does not come without controversy. This is particularly the case in modern America, where bi-partisan rhetoric is often fierce and divisive. In the context of the current Presidential election, for example, much of the debate surrounds the proper role of government in administrating social welfare, with the right wing of the political spectrum sometimes asserting that the government has no such responsibility at all, and that by interfering in "the free market", they are simply robbing those people who have worked hard enough to be successful while benefitting those who chose not to work as hard. Obviously, such a view is too simplistic to properly represent the chaotic and nuanced state of the reality in which we live, but nevertheless, these are the popular views that surround the topic of social welfare. In order to address the matter more effectively, and develop a superior understanding of what social welfare policy is, how it is developed, and how it should be developed in the future, it is necessary to understand all the various dimensions of social welfare, including the historical, social, economic, and political dimensions.
