With a base of technical knowledge that doubles every few years, and with seemingly contradictory trends at every turn, the average business getting smaller thanks to technology or larger due to industry consolidation - its no wonder that many commentators/ future prognosticators despair of what the next 25 years will bring. In addition, how todays workforce differs from the ones of the past relevant to the implications of future changes in the ethnic, racial, age, and gender composition of the U.S. workforce is also worthy of serious consideration. Fueled by labor market tightness, demographic and immigration change increased workforce diversity has important implications for the American workplace, its workers as well as for future employment policy (Hattiangadi, 1998). This essay examines the vision of the generic 21st century worker/ workforce, in addition to those workers in the federal government. On June 20, 2001 Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao asserted that "America needs a wake-up call about its workforce." Chao went on to tell summit participants at Washington, D.C.s MCI Center that, "There will be huge economic consequences if we dont address demographic changes in the workforce and technological changes in the workplace.
