Georgia is a conservative state and supports the president in every major poll and Cleland has never been very popular ("Election," 2002). That would mean that Clelands seat is in jeopardy. However, thus far, Chambliss has not made a strong run (2002). In writing on this intriguing subject, a student will want to add facts after the race is over. How did the candidates fare? If Cleland wins, one might write something to the effect that he won despite his lack of a strong following and if Chambliss wins, one will want to point out that he was essentially an underdog, but was able to score points for the Republican party. The race has not been pretty and there have been scalding attacks. Chambliss accused Cleland of breaking his oath to defend the Constitution due to a 1997 vote on the amendment to the Chemical Weapons treaty, something that eliminated a ban on certain nations being a part of UN inspections teams in Iraq ("Patriotism," 2002). While such issues loom large in todays environment due to 911, such issues often go over the heads of the constituents. Iraq is far away and other issues that are near and dear to a voters heart like abortion and taxes are what they usually like to reckon with. Also, attacks often backfire, making the candidate look desperate and mean. The remark did draw criticism because Cleland has a strong military background (2002). Some analysts suggest that war-hero candidates are strong in this election cycle, no matter what party they are affiliated with (2002).
