Temperature and its Impact on Mollusks Research Compiled by 4/2011 Please Mollusks are among the more adaptable of natures organisms. They can live, and in fact thrive, in a variety of environmental conditions. Mollusks too, however, have certain limitations in regard to environmental parameters but researchers have found that local populations often adapt to their particular environmental circumstances. The purpose of this paper is to review two research studies on mollusk populations. Experimental design will be assessed and summarized. Mollusks are invertebrates, multicellular species without a backbone. Unlike warm blooded animals, cold blooded animals like mollusks do not have the ability to regulate their own body temperature. Mollusks are poikilothermic, their body temperatures vary widely in response to their environment. Not surprisingly, mollusk populations have been found to vary in regard to their tolerance of temperature variations. The ability of organisms to adjust to temperature variations is referred to as metabolic temperature acclimation (MTA) (Elderkin and Klerks, 2005). Significant research has been conducted on what temperature ranges mollusks have been able to tolerate. Lutz (2008), for example, researches mollusks as they exist within other natural assemblages of organisms in the wild. The variables he examined included the thermal and chemical characteristics of an area, time, and species composition. Lutzs research emphasizes that environmental changes have the potential to ...
