Technology is seen in a wide number of applications utilized by distribution companies. The development of mapping software and satellite navigation systems has increased the ability of management to control, maximize and monitor the movement of the delivery vehicles and consignments which are in their charge. The process starts with the mapping and logistics software. A distribution company will benefit from an ability to determine the most efficient groups for the series of deliveries to be undertaken by any particular vehicle. This creates efficiencies in terms of time; allowing a single driver to make more deliveries in a day, it is also cost-efficient in terms of managing the fuel bills for the vehicles. Mapping and logistics software will allow delivery routes to be determined by computer within preset parameters, such as inability to deliver to specific clients at particular times of day and the ability to avoid certain areas during high traffic density periods. These types of parameters have to be put into the system by the logistics management of the company. A major benefit has been increased efficiency with the automation processes that formerly have the potential to be very labor-intensive, especially if there are the new clients and/or changes to the proposed delivery schedules. The satellite navigation systems facilitate easy navigation for the drivers, be interfaced with the delivery routes in order to show the most efficient groups are being taken.
