an essay about personal intercommunication experiences. Discussion Tannens essay is interesting, but doesnt break much new ground. However, what she says is worth remembering: men and women do pay attention to one another, but their communication styles are so different that it often seems as if theyre not listening. This appears to have a lot to do with the "roles" that society assigns to men and women, and the expectations thus put on them: that women are "emotional" and "submissive" while men are "aggressive" and "stoic." Thus, men who express their emotions freely are often seen as weak or feminine; similarly, women who remain strong and in control are seen as "hard" or even "butch." Thus because of the expectations society has of feminine and masculine behavior, men and women have different communications styles, and do not readily understand one another. The student will need to use personal experience to discuss Tannens points and how they relate to her life. Doing that, she might write something like the following: I notice that one of Tannens main points is that men and women have different conversations when theyre talking to members of the same sex. Specifically, she says that women tend to stick to one subject, while men cover many different subjects in the course of one conversation. I have found just the opposite to be true. I can remember sitting and talking with female friends, and the conversation roaming from politics, to plays, to movies, to cars, to the way slang enters the language, to our worst dates ever, to the economy, to foreign policy, and on and on, well into the "wee hours" of the morning.
