It sounds somewhat ludicrous or even childish, but this is how politics are played today. And while political games are certainly in motion, this is nothing new. In focusing on a slice of history--elections between 1824 and 1860--it seems that tricks and techniques to gain the trust of the people, and their votes, were certainly implemented,. From the 1924 campaign on, it seems that little by little, opponents would be attacked and as time went on, slogans and songs were prominent. Later, it would be the media that would propel little known candidates to greatness, something that occurred with Lincoln, but something that also occurs today. For example, no one heard of Bill Clinton just before he became a contender for the Democratic nomination. While today, elections are fought with sound bites and dirty campaigns, a transition was noted early in the nineteenth century. That is, suddenly campaigns were less about issues and more about personality. Boller (1984) claims that in the election of 1824, personalities and not the issues were paramount. The election was about Jackson and Adams. One tactic that seemed to be used was to make it appear that the adversary was a man of poor character. This is a technique that is often used today in the form of attack ads. During the election of 1824 for example, it was alleged that corrupt bargaining practices occurred between Clay and Adams (1984). Four years later, a repeat occurred. It was John Quincy Adams versus Andrew Jackson once again (1984). Andrew Jackson was elected to the Presidency in 1829 and would serve two terms. Presidential terms were not yet limited ...
