the perpetrator and the victim. The crime affects both sets of parents, friends, and even in the case of a small town, the community. There are many factors which experts state go into the creating of a juvenile sexual offender, but rendering treatment for said offenders is a trickier business. Why? Each case is as individual as the parties involved. What works for one offender is completely useless with another. What this paper seeks to do, then, is present the most commonly used approaches to treating the juvenile sexual offender with the end goal of long term rehabilitation of the offender. Dr. John Hunger, Ph.D, reports that most offenders are male, tending to fall into two main categories. Those categories mainly pertain to whom the perpetrator targets: adults or children. The treatment for each category tends to vary, hence the distinction. Those who offend against adults or peers seem to share the same types of profiles. They are in trouble for other sorts of activities as well, including theft, substance abuse, and suffer from conduct disorders of all types. This type of abuser is highly aggressive and may use weapons and considerable force without regard to the well being of his victim(Hunter 2000). SUGGESTED TREATMENTS: With the aggressive juvenile offender who targets adults and peers the approaches which seem to be having the most success are those which elicit compliance to a rehabilitation program. One such program offers an incentive for the offender in that they suspend the juveniles sentence pending the completion of a treatment program. If the juvenile opts to forego the treatment, or becomes unruly, unresponsive, face the possibility of incarceration.
