a nation. In 1930, however, the notion of globalization was far from the shores of the Dominican Republic, as Rafael Trujillo came into power. Though he brought about a lot of positive changes it should never be thought that Trujillo was anything more than a ruthless dictator. A popular army commander, Rafael Trujillo assumed total political control of the government in 1930. His main goal would seem to have been to make the Dominican Republic into a world economic force, at any costs. Those costs would result in wide ranged human rights violations, and in the end instead of a world economic force, the Dominican Republic was plunged into severe economic decline. Though he continued to elaborate on the former administrations policy of internal growth, built roads, schools, implemented irrigation programs, Trujillo accomplished this growth through terrible repression, murder and torture. In short, he terrorized his own people to the point where they were afraid for their very lives. Many have suggested that the accomplishments achieved during his thirty year reign were built upon the foundations laid by the former ruler, Vasquez, and this may very well be true. Part of his power lay in his military might. Early on he established a Gestapo type secret army which basically was given carte blanche to enforce the laws and priorities of Trujillo. Political opponents simply disappeared. Others were murdered outright. When one looks at the long term of office that he held, it looks very much like a step back in time to Medieval England and the feudal lords. Indeed, Trujillos might was great and anything he touched, he owned. He had absolute power and as such directed every facet of life for his people.
