attentions. In Grasss Nobel Laureate Winning book, Tin Drum, the function of the artist will play a significant role. Throughout the novel references to individuality and uniqueness are addressed
through the symbolic role of the artist. For example, in Chapter seven he reflects upon whom he would consider his greatest theoretical influences. He names Rasputin and Goethe who are
polar opposites in every sense of the word. In fact, however, the role of the artist in this chapter is to illustrate that art can portray a wide array of
human emotion, thus signifying that Oskar sees himself as split into two very different, yet unique parts. The artist, then, serves as a definition of self. I was beginning
to fancy that my drum was teaching, educating my fellow pupils, making them into my pupils, when la Spollenhauer [Oskars teacher] approached my desk. For a time she watched my
hands and drumsticks, I wouldnt even say that her manner was inept; she smiled self-forgetfully and tried to clap her hands to my beat(Grass 80). In chapter thirty-six there
is a great reference made to the works of Shakespeare, especially that of Hamlet in which a young prince is considered insane. However, instead of seeing himself as Hamlet, he
