On the one hand, there are people who believe that the death penalty is a deterrent, that the idea that people die when they murder prevents more murders from happening. On the other side of the argument, however, are the people who believe that life should not be taken away from anyone, even a murderer. This paper will examine the "con" side of the death penalty, and discuss why capital punishment, as it exists in the United States is an inhumane way to deal with murderers. The term "capital punishment" or "capital" refers to a persons head, as in the past, people were often executed by beheading (Robinson). These days, at least in the United States, capital punishment doesnt involve decapitation; but can be done either in the Electric Chair (Florida is the only state that does this) or by lethal injection. The United States is one of the few industrialized countries in the world that executes criminals; and that executes mentally ill people, people with low IQs and children who murder - i.e., who were under 18 years of age at the time of the act (Robinson). When asked about their feelings about the death penalty, 60 to 80 percent believe the death penalty should continue (Robinson). However, when Americans were questioned as to whether they wanted to see criminals executed or have executions replaced with a system that guaranteed that the inmate serve life in prison and work for money, and that the money be directed to helping the family of the person or people they killed, about 55 to 60 percent of those asked wanted to see the latter system, rather than the death penalty (Robinson). ...
