The three plays under examination for this are Rosmerholm, The Lady From the Sea, and Little Eyolf. The following paper examines the symbolic "soul murder" as it relates to the personal responsibility of the characters, for the characters are ultimately responsible for the "soul murder." Symbolism and Henrik Ibsen In the story of Rosmerholm the symbolism that is heavy in the story is that of the white horse. The white horse is incredibly symbolic of dead people, the soul murder in this case, of the ghosts that will not leave the living alone for one reason or another. Throughout the play there is the constant mention of the white horse, or horses, and the two characters who seem most bothered or concerned with this image are Rosmer and Miss West. Rosmers wife committed suicide and he feels responsible. At the same time Miss West feels she is responsible and believes she drove Rosmers wife to suicide so that she could have Rosmer for herself. Neither character seems able to move on and love one another because of their guilt, and throughout the play the white horse, presumably the deceased Mrs. Rosmer, haunts them. Both characters, as noted, feel they are the cause of the suicide of Mrs. Rosmer and by the end of the story Miss West agrees to commit suicide to prove her love to Rosmer and Rosmer ultimately decides to commit suicide along with Miss West. They have felt guilty of their involvement with the previous suicide and are haunted by the white horse and in the end as a character watches from a distance there is the possible image of the white horse that follows them: "Good ...
