Okonkwo is welcomed by his uncle, Uchendu, the oldest living maternal family member, but discovers that starting over again at his age in a place that is not his homeland is extremely difficult. Despite working hard, Okonkwo no longer takes any real pleasure from his efforts because his dream of becoming a lord of Umuofia may be gone forever. Uchendu observes his nephew frequently struggling with bouts of depression. A ceremonial ritual honoring the arrival of the new wife of Uchendus youngest son is a brief respite from the despair. Finally, Uchendu takes Okonkwo aside and tells him, "Your duty is to comfort your wives and children and take them back to your fatherland after seven years. But if you allow sorrow to weigh you down and kill you, they will all die in exile" (Achebe 124). During Okonkwos second year of exile, Chapter 15 describes a visit from his friend Obierika, who tells him of the destruction of a nearby village, Abame. It began with the entry of a single white man, but as the Oracle predicted, there were more to follow along with a group of submissive Africans. After a violent shootout, there was little left of Abame. A difference of opinion develops between Uchendu and Okonkwo as to how the situation should have been handled, with Uchendu saying the villagers exacerbated the situation by killing the white intruders out of fear, while Okonkwo claims their mistake was in not being sufficiently prepared to handle an outside attack. Okonkwo tells his friend he is unable to properly thank him for generously bringing him the money from his yam crops, but Obierika tells him that no thanks is necessary.
