stories. They are stories about a boy and a girl who fall in love despite cultural, or social, differences. They are, of course, both stories that are very different as well. In many respects many people equate these stories, in one way or another, with the classic William Shakespeare story Romeo and Juliet. The following paper examines these stories, individually and then together, in relationship to the beginning of the films. Discussion/connection is also made in relationship to the stories reflection of Romeo and Juliet. Grease Grease was created in the late 1970s when the nation was perhaps a bit stuck on the nostalgic simplicity of the 50s. It was a time when the United States was likely also trying to forget the complexity of the Vietnam War. As such it is not a deep or necessarily message filled film. This is quite evident from the beginning of the film. Or, as one individual notes, "It certainly isnt a momentous film" (Berardinelli). It was, and always will be, simple entertainment. The movie opens up with images of the ocean and waves crashing on rocks. In the background is the song "Love is a Many Splendid Thing" which is very innocent and then the viewer is presented with the images of a young woman and young man on the beach, somewhat camouflaged in terms of lighting by the setting sun. The focus is on them in the light of the sunset, kissing and embracing one another. Then it goes off into sort of a montage of what one assumes is their summer together, playfully chasing one another and kissing, or sitting on the rocks and looking at the ocean. ...
