Strokes are one of the most common life threatening afflictions. Indeed, an estimated eighty strokes per hour occur in the U.S. alone (Obesity, Fitness & Wellness Week, 2005). Most women, however, have little knowledge about the risk factors associated with strokes, are unfamiliar with its warning signs, and do not even know what to do in the event of a stroke in order to minimize the chances of fatality or even to minimize the less-serious strokes long-term impacts (Obesity, Fitness & Wellness Week, 2005). This is particularly disturbing given that an estimated eighty percent of strokes could be prevented and that quick medical attention when a stroke does occur can save lives and prevent serious long-term impacts (Obesity, Fitness & Wellness Week, 2005). Women obviously have special educational and support needs when it comes to preventing strokes and recuperating from them when they do occur and once again taking a productive role in life. Women over fifty are of particular concern in this regard because of their increased risk factors. Client Aggregate There are many client aggregates to consider when reviewing the special needs of women over fifty in regard to stroke education and rehabilitation. One such aggregate can be found at the Kessler Institute of Rehabilitation. The greatest number of female clients at this facility that have suffered from a stroke are indeed over fifty.
