Steroid use is disturbing regardless of where it occurs but it seems particularly disturbing when it is found in a sport that in many ways represents our American ideology itself. Baseball, after all, holds a different place in our society than do sports like football, basketball, and wrestling. We inoculate our youth with the idea of baseball practically before they can walk. We enter them into T-Ball teams and gleefully attend their every game. We watch them progress up the ranks from T-Ball to Little League to Varsity to Collegiate. Some are talented enough that they eventually climb all the way to professional baseball, an accomplishment that to many is as commendable as securing a higher degree, entering a respected professional occupation, and raking in a six figure pay check. Baseball, after all, is our national pastime! Even Congress agrees! Congressman Henry Waxman of California, for example, recently clarified: "Baseball is a sport that has special status under laws passed by Congress because its our national pastime" (Small, 2005, 6). National pastime or not, however, baseball is no less susceptible to the impacts of steroid use than is any other sport. Anabolic-androgenic steroids are derived from testosterone and function in the stimulus of the production of cellular protein.
