Speed is a critical factor in practically every aspect of combat. It is particularly important, however, in relation to tactical intelligence. Tactical intelligence involves communication between the naval, air, and ground troops; communication that conveys critical information about enemy location, movement, weaponry and potential strengths and weaknesses. This communication can be used to both plan and to execute attacks and/or counterdefenses. Tactical intelligence is also a critical component of military planning. Whether intelligence is being use in tactical execution or planning, however, speed in information dissemination is of the essence. The first step in the speedy dissemination of information is the efficient gathering of that information. Information is gleaned through a variety of reconnaissance activities. Consider, for example, the reconnaissance value of the U-2 aircraft (an aircraft commonly known as the "Dragon Lady"). The single seat U-2 made its first flight in 1955. Primarily in the interest of perfecting the accuracy and speed with which it could collect reconnaissance information, however, the U-2 has undergone numerous upgrades since that initial flight. Global Aircraft (2004) reports that by 1967 the size of the U-2 had increased by forty percent, by 1981 the TR-1A (a tactical reconnaissance version) was delivered to the U.S. Airforce and by 1992 all TR-1s and U-2s were designated U-2Rs. Subsequently, complete engine replacements occurred in all U-2Rs and they were designated U-2S/TU-2S (Global Aircraft). The U-2 is, and has been, one of the most formidable planes in our military fleet. It has, in fact, performed many critical missions over the years.
