If any author could be said to challenge social and literary convention with their work, D.H. Lawrence would certainly qualify. An English Novelist,
Lawrence often expanded his forte to include short stories, literary criticism and even poetry and painting. In short, he was one of the greatest literary figures of the early
twentieth century. He also tended to run slightly askew of established societal norms. The liberties he took in describing sexual encounters were only one of many of the
deviations he took from social and literary convention. None of his works illustrate this tendency any better than does "Sons and Lovers". Lawrence takes this approach not because
he wants to harness the "shock factor" in order to captivate a reading audience but because he wants to explore the most primal aspects of mankinds nature.
David Herbert Lawrence lived and worked between 1885 and 1930 primarily in England. He was a prolific author and concentrated primarily on fiction. His
first poems were published fairly early in his career and his first novel was published in 1911 when he was only twenty-six years old. Much of his literary talent
was applied to the task of making mankind aware of his intimate attachment to nature. Lawrence viewed mans attention to his own intellect in disregard to everything else, particularly
natural and physical instincts, as potentially disastrous. He saw hope, however, in mans evolution which he felt destined the race to reaching a greater understanding of his ties to
