field is open to research in an environment where new solutions are sought for Chemical Dependency Therapy (CDT) One of these solutions is solutions-focused based therapy (SFBT), which focuses on goals in a client-focused, short-term therapeutic approach. This approach eliminates dwelling on problems and turns directly to solutions. Longitudinal studies appear to support SFBT, particularly in relationship to CDT to cigarettes, but the findings are not as conclusive in relationship to alcohol and drugs, especially with coexisting deprresion. Literature Review In a three-year longitudinal study, Knekt, Laaksonen, Raitasalo, Haaramo, & Lindfors (2010) compared the results of psychotherapy in bringing real change to patients lives when different therapies were used. The study focused on differences between "short-term and long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy (SPP and LPP) and solution-focused therapy (SFT)" (Knekt et al, 2010). The study focused on mood and anxiety disordered 326 outpatients, aged 20-46 years, selected randomly for LPP, SPP and SFT. Other lifestyle variables were alcohol consumption, smoking, body mass index (BMI), exercise, and serum cholesterol. Overall, there were no significant trends changes over the three years on alcohol consumption and smoking, but there were some differences among the three treatments. SPP returned negative results with increased alcohol consumption compared with LPP, but SFT showed a reduction in smoking compared to SPP. This led the authors to conclude that small therapy-specific changes are more common in short-term therapy. A DAISI (Depression and Alcohol Integrated and Single-focused Interventions) study by Baker, Kavanagh, Kay-Lambkin, Hunt, Lewin, Carr, & Connolly.
