His contention was that mankind harbors a power within its psyche that has given life in the form of intellectual consciousness. What he termed the ghost of a man was defining of mans intrinsic aptitude to grasp concepts that are far beyond his level of comprehension, only to ultimately be able to process the information. Hence, words are what bridge the gap between being an active participant in ones own communicable knowledge. Possible criticisms might include how Socrates was at odds with most everyone when it came to his personal perception of human nature and the ways of life. He was of the impression that mankinds business on earth was to find what is right and adhere to it, a concept that spurred a great deal of controversy with many of Socrates associates - not the least of which was Gorgias - who harbored quite a different perspective on the meaning and purpose of life. The two men, while aspiring to seek much the same answer, found the road that takes them there filled with opposition to each others commentary. Part of the contrariety between the two philosophers arose from the manifestation that Gorgias was forever attempting to read between the lines of what Socrates had to say, perpetually wondering if his own interpretation of Socrates views actually represented what was truth. It was not uncommon for others to counter Socrates philosophies, partly because it proved to be an inventive way to enter into friendly debate and partly because those like Gorgias held staunchly opposing views that provided considerable insight as to the two characters independent thoughts and aims.
