is memorialized as the "father of sociology". Born in the last years of the eighteenth century, on January 19, 1798, Comte found many reasons to formulate his basic sociological premises. While many might regard his theories as too old to have contemporary application, in reality they have considerable application to todays world. When applying these theories, however, it is important to keep in mind key distinctions that exist in this world that were not even a figment of Comtes imagination in his. Interestingly, Comtes world and our own share many similarities. At the same time, however, there are many notable distinctions. Comtes theories were formulated in nineteenth century France during one of the countrys most turbulent times. The social problems that engulfed the country inspired Comte to define the basic laws that governed societal interaction (Delaney, 2003). Comte had a strong background in mathematics and intended for this new approach to social problems to be governed by the hard sciences as opposed to the humanities (Delaney, 2003). One particularly challenging goal that confronted Comte in this earlier time was the need to separate religion from science, to synthesize the basic principles of the various branches of the sciences into one integrated system of ideas so that an intellectually based and moral system could be constructed that would actually allow science to be put to use in bettering society (Delaney, 2003). Comtes observations on human interactions are just as valid today as they were in his time.
