Social withdrawal is a manifestation of depression and it can be linked with serious problems like suicidality. Numerous factors interact to influence an individuals withdrawal and the underlying problems that withdrawal suggests. This is especially true among adolescents who have not fully matured either physically or psychologically. Some of these factors are genetic and physiological, others are environmental. Treatment varies accordingly. While most often the genetic and physiological aspects of social withdrawal are not factors which can be easily altered, environmental determinants of social withdrawal can be changed prior to the adverse impacts being rendered on adolescent psychological development. Social withdrawal can manifest either as a result of environmental factors or biological factors. A third school of thought, however, contends that it is both biological and environmental factors which cause this condition. The fast-paced lifestyles which are expected in todays world result in a number of stressors which can contribute to social withdrawal. The societal demand to "keep up with the Jones", alone, presents tremendous stress. In a world where teenagers are literally killing one another for a coveted brand of tennis shoes or jeans, having the "right" clothes can be perceived as tremendously important. Those teens that feel they do not conform too often elect to withdraw from situations where conformity is the norm. There are, of course, many other reasons that can lead to social withdrawal. Abuse is one of these most concerning of these reasons and, as those the direct problems of withdrawal werent concerning enough, abuse can often lead to suicide as well.
