after Christophers birth, there was another baby girl Elizabeth, but their mother died soon after that ("Sir Christopher Wren," 2002). The family was well off ("Sir Christopher Wren," 2002). Christopher grew up rather frail and took to science and language ("Sir Christopher Wren," 2002). It is interesting to note that as Christopher would grow up, he would become interested in many things. Also, his teachers were sometimes extraordinary. For example, William Oughtred was a teacher of Wrens and also the inventor of a form of the slide rule (Lightner, 2000). Oughtred also happened to be a preacher (Lightner, 2000). When young Christopher was in school, the English Civil War would break ("Sir Christopher Wren," 2002). The war would last for quite awhile. Interestingly, the war supplied fresh dead bodies for the physicians in medical school to use for experimentation (Jardine, 2002). Jardine (2002) explains: "There is, of course, something rather distasteful about this - medical men exploiting the pain and suffering of casualties of war in the interests of science" (p.56). The war was not bad for Christopher. His family were Royalists and so favored by the sitting king ("Sir Christopher Wren," 2002). In fact, his father belonged to the inner circle, much like the royal physicians (Jardine, 2002). His sister married and her husband, Holder, became Christophers math tutor ("Sir Christopher Wren," 2002). Holder would encourage Christopher to explore astronomy ("Sir Christopher Wren," 2002). Christopher would focus on science but did not go directly to college ("Sir Christopher Wren," 2002). He seemed to be focused on the sundial, at least for a time ("Sir Christopher Wren," 2002).
