The controversy, and new proposal, highlights the fact that Washington D.C. is not a state and never was. Constitutionally, it is supposed to be a place where the federal government resides, and it is, but since that time, the region has grown. Many citizens live there. It seems that it is about time for the district to achieve statehood. There is much controversy to that end. After all, historically, this district was supposed to be immune from the politics of the country. Now, people want to see the citizens who live there have increased representation. Of course, that is not an unusual stance. After all, the people who live in the district likely feel that they deserve to be represented. Why are these the only citizens who are clearly Americans not able to achieve the same representation as other states? Why are their needs not addressed? In fact, the historic compromise that saw representatives be distributed by population, but senators by statehood, would see a nation that is fairly represented in the federal government. With such a plan, people from large states feel that they have enough representation as they live in districts with specific representatives who are numerous and carry electoral power. Further, the small states do not feel disenfranchised because they, like all the other states have two powerful senators at their disposal. Washington, D.C. has neither senators or voting representatives and while that is a historical fact, it is something that many perceive as unfair.
