What is real and what is deceptive are the questions that the tormented protagonist must answer in order to come to grips with what he feels impelled to do. In addressing these questions, Shakespeare addresses the conflict between the various value codes that compete for Hamlets loyalty. By examining these forces that pull at the mind of the young Danish prince, it is possible to gain insight into the indecision that haunts young Hamlet throughout this classic tragedy. At the beginning of the play, Hamlets fathers ghost implores Hamlet to "Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder" (Act I, scene V, line 25). The task of revenge, to take the life of his fathers murderer, is traumatic enough in itself to give Hamlet pause for reflection, but added to this are his doubts about the origins of the ghost that has laid this injunction on him. In Act I, scene V, lines 38-41, Hamlet voices his quandary: "Angels and ministers of grace defend us! / Be thou a spirit of health or goblin damnd,/ Bring with thee airs from heaven or blasts from hell." As this indicates, Hamlet does not know for certain if this is truly the spirit of his father speaking to him, or a devil that has assumed the shape of his father in order to lure him into sinful acts. Furthermore, there is a third option, which is that Hamlet has simply gone mad. Therefore, before he acts, Hamlet tries to ensure that his uncle is indeed guilty of his fathers death. Consequently, much of the plays action concerns watching and being watched, eavesdropping, and determining the nature of a situation that is masked in misrepresentation.
