Traditional mainstream American society in previous decades tended to classify anything other than intercourse in the missionary position between a married man and woman as deviant and perverse. However, the sexual revolution of the 1960s began to challenge these boundaries, as did the gay movement, which ensued in the 1970s. Therefore, what constitutes sex perversion in contemporary society? The following essay contemplates this question by examining the views of three scholars, Thomas Nagel, Robert Solomon and Janice Moulton, on the topic of sexual perversion, which are contrasted with the writers personal views. Thomas Nagel begins his discussion of sexual perversion by acknowledging that many people feel that the idea of sexual perversion does not make sense, as this concept labels some sexual desires and practices as unnatural. He then goes on to describe his own beliefs, and offering the definition that a sexual perversion is behavior that indicates an unnatural sexual preference (Nagel, 1969). There is an inclination to consider the sexual practices which an individuals community disapproves of as perversions, and what is regarded as unnatural differs from one culture to the next. However, Nagel disagrees that this is a valid way to define and classify sexual perversion. As sexual desire may be considered to be one of the appetites, Nagel addresses the topic of perversion by discussing what would constitute a perversion of different appetite, such as hunger.
