This 20 page paper looks at the subject of segregation in the urban setting. Several points are explored, including African American history, the slave trade and migration to the North. The thesis of this paper is that segregation is more acceptable now than it has ever been in the past. The reason why is due to the adoption of multiculturalism. Their purposes for migration included religious freedom, desire for economic gain and escape from fascist leadership. Whatever the reasons are for people coming to the United States, they were extraordinarily different from the reason why most black Africans stepped foot on American soil. The primary initiation into American culture, for the black African, was as a slave. He was sold into the once acceptable practice of slavery and treated as less than human. Slaves were transported naked for the sake of cleanliness. According to Conneau (1976), chains, handcuffs, leg irons and the like were used out of necessity to keep order; slaves were brought onto a ship in groups of ten. The methodical way in which slaves were shipped were certainly conducive to the theory that slaves were not treated as human beings. That notion was further affirmed by the fact that black men, even after being freed, were not considered full men under the law for some time. It took a Constitutional amendment to effect complete freedom. The topic of segregation in the urban setting is critical to American life. The recent clashes between blacks and whites have gone unnoticed as time erases memories of Rodney King and the Los Angeles Riots. Kings "why cant we all get along" sentiment gets at the very heart of this papers thesis. The reason why cities are racially segregated has something to do with the initiation of black Africans in the country. However, to assume that the treatment of blacks, prejudicial ideation implicit, is to be very simplistic and ignore cultural variances.
