Scientific objectivity, then, is based on the desire to apply rigors and standards of research to uncovering answers to specific research questions, but the questions themselves define the direction of the research (Sorrell 1994: 7). 2. What is the relationship between attempted objectivity and explicitly stated methodology. Objectivity is applied in relation to the research process, and in defining how research will be collected and applied within the scope of a given methodology. In the case of any type of research, the creation of an explicitly stated methodology provides a basis for the research process, but objectivity needs to be applied in relation to the data that is subsequently collected and evaluated in regards to the hypothesis. As a result, a methodology should relate both a hypothesis and a null hypothesis, each of which can be proven or disproven as a result of the research process. 3. What is the relationship between attempted objectivity and peer review. The peer-review process ensues the quality of the research, but does not inherently define objectivity as a component of research. The peer-review process does ensure that the hypotheses presented have been adequately tested by the researchers, that the hypotheses are appropriate for the research, and that the claims, results and implications of the research appear adequately aligned with both the research outcomes and the hypotheses that are presented (Cargill & OConnor 2009: 74).
