and the way in which these beliefs fuel classroom practices. The subjects for this study were separated into two phases, the first of which included nine science teachers at a high school in Amherst, New Hampshire. These first phase subjects perspectives were assessed through the administration of a Contemporary Goals of Science Education Survey. The second phase of the study included interviews and observations that were conducted of three of the subjects, in order to relate the connection between observational classroom data and the reflections of educators in their surveyed responses. The researchers described this as "purposeful sampling" of the three subjects from the nine existing science teachers in order to form "typical case" scenarios in which the observations and reflections in interviews can provide typical outcomes. The research methodology for this study is based on a grounded theory hypothesis and so is non experimental and integrates both qualitative and quantitative elements within the scope of this approach. The method includes the administering of the Contemporary Goals of Science Education Survey first outlined by Zeidler and Duffy (1994) in order to assess overall beliefs relative to goals defined by the Coalition of Essential Schools (CES). The researcher then used a purposeful sampling to select "typical case teachers who could be observed in their classroom setting. Using grounded theory, the researcher developed research questions that could be used to relate the responses of educators to the classroom observations. The second phase of the study, then, incorporates the use of collected interview data to provide for accuracy and the clarification of data observed in the classroom setting. The data analysis procedure used in this study is based on ...
