small element of a culture. The following paper examines the primary theme of the story, illustrating how the storys theme is primarily one of acceptance on the part of Nea.
"Saving Sourdi" by May-Lee Chai In Shais story the plot involves Sourdi, a young woman who is betrothed to a man. She is not particularly happy with the match
but says nothing and does nothing about it. Her sister, a younger sister, Nea has other ideas and does all she can to try to save Sourdi from the marriage.
In essence she is trying to keep Sourdi for herself. With Sourdi leaving Nea will be alone and their special relationship and life will end. Nea is a somewhat
controlling individual compared to Sourdi, who does nothing to change her situation. Nea will not sit still for it and while she believes she is saving Sourdi from a man
who is not good enough for her she is essentially acting out of fear and selfishness because she does not want to lose Sourdi. In Sourdi and Neas world, although
a world now in America, a woman is basically in the hands of the world of men. They have little or no control over their destinies and marriage and motherhood
is their role in the society. Sourdi accepts that without argument and realistically her life with her husband is not horrible. But, in the eyes of Nea it is horrible.
At the same time Nea is not really acting as a strong feminist who argues against the world of men in any cohesive manner. Her focus is really keeping Sourdi
