It was a time of despair for many, and also a time of change in terms of religious power. It was a time in history when changes were imminent and those who held firm and virtuous in the face of such change were admired and seen to be worthy of sainthood. In the following paper we examine two particular saints, comparing their lives and their sainthood. The paper then briefly discusses the importance of saints in Medieval Europe and illustrates the difference between saints and martyrs. Saints in Medieval Europe In discussing particular saint of Medieval Europe we focus on Saint Perpetua and Saint Balthild. Now, granted, there were numerous male saints as well during this time period, but the women saints served a significant purpose in the society and as such are the primary focus. Saint Perpetua was one of many martyrs who suffered at Carthage on 7 March 203. "The details of the martyrdom....in the North African Church have reached us through a genuine, contemporary description, one of the most affecting accounts of the glorious warfare of Christian martyrdom in ancient times. By a rescript of Septimus Severus (193-211) all imperial subjects were forbidden under severe penalties to become Christians" (Anonymous Perpetua perpetu.htm). Because of this particular decree at least five individuals were cast into prison, one of them being Vibia Perpetua who was "a young married lady of noble birth" (Anonymous Perpetua perpetu.htm). Interestingly enough, "Perpetuas father was a pagan; her mother, however, and two brothers were Christians, one being still a catechumen; a third brother, the child Dinocrates, had died a pagan" (Anonymous Perpetua perpetu.htm).
