about the human condition while still attempting to keep the novel at a readable length. In order to do this, then, symbols provide the necessary insight for the reader, utilizing a minimum of words. Kafkas Metamorphosis uses the characters and the plot, as symbols themselves. Each character becomes highly symbolic as the story progresses. In the beginning the reader learns that main character is the main caretaker of the family. Unfortunately, for one reason or another, he is unable to work because he has inexplicably been transformed into a bug. As the rain hits against the window in his room it is certain that there can be no good ending for this story. Mr. Samsa is Gregors father. He has little tolerance, or appreciation for his son. When he learns that Gregor has become a bug he shoves him rudely back into his room and slams the door, injuring Gregor in the process. The wounds that he gains from this exchange with his father are symbolic of the emotional and psychological wounds which have been obviously inflicted by this man on Gregor for a long time. What is more evident is that, for one reason or another, Mr. Samsa is rougher on Gregor than he is toward the rest of the family. There is a picture of a women wrapped in furs, which hangs on one of the walls in Gregors room. This may be symbolic of Kafkas actual desire for a wife, though he would never follow through with marriage. It is well known that Kafka was tormented by his bad relationship with his father.
