Even the finances of these two carriers are different -- in the wake of 9-11 Southwest managed to do quite well (at least comparatively), while United has had to declare bankruptcy; as well as disrupted its shuttle service. But recent reports indicate that all may not be well with Southwest. Much like the rest of the industry, Southwest has not been immune to an economic slump, rising fuel prices and the fallout from 9-11. Net income during 2002 fell 52.9 percent, compared to that in 2001 -- and the airline ended the year with $1.8 billion in cash (Phillips, 2003). During the fourth quarter of 2002, cost per available seat mile fell below that of the fourth quarter in 2001 (Phillips, 2003). In addition, the airlines revenue passenger miles (RPM) rose 2.8 percent during 2002 compared to a 5.2 percent increase in available seat miles or ASM (Phillips, 2003). This led to a decline in the load factor to 63 percent (Phillips, 2003). Added to this was an increase in the yield per RPM of 10.2 percent as well as an increase in the operating revenue per ASM of 7.6 percent (Phillips, 2003). the operating costs per available seat mile (CASM) also increased 6.3 percent (Phillips, 2003). On the other side, on-line bookings through Southwest.com increased to 54 percent, but the airline had to offer more discounts during the fourth quarter of 2002 than it had in recent years (Phillips, 2003).
