This writer/tutor personally believes that community leaders, religious leaders, parents and other stakeholders should always take an active role in schools, but they should do so in a manner that is appropriate and designated by school administrators, principals and teachers. In other words, it is entirely appropriate for these stakeholders to organize fund-raisers or committees that address the needs of schools. In short, they provide a valuable resource for addressing all unmet school needs. However, what I personally feel is an inappropriate role for parents, community leaders and other non-educators is when they begin to interfere with pedagogical issues, such as classroom instruction and establishing curricula. Educators are highly trained professionals. The general public would not dream of trying to tell a dentist how to fill a tooth, or a doctor how to treat a illness or injury, but they often feel free to tell teachers how and what to teach. Unless a teacher is indulging in gross negligence or unprofessional activity, it is my opinion that that role of community and religious leaders, as well as other stakeholders, is to facilitate and aid teachers in their jobs, not to try to take over their jobs.
