Morgans main point is that contrary to the old childrens rhyme "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me," words can be extraordinarily hurtful, often causing great distress and sometimes lasting damage. She uses a series of anecdotes to illustrate the way in which words have hurt her, and in which she has hurt others, unintentionally, by her ill-chosen words. The article is well-written, informative and straightforward, so the reader should have no problem understanding it. The examples Morgan uses that resonate most strongly, and that we will discuss in more detail, include her thoughtless comments to a friend after she (Morgan) had been to a personal growth seminar; her reaction to a fashion consultants supposedly humorous comments to her; and her example of a friend who understands how powerful words are and uses them to empower others. In the first example, Morgan writes that she found herself at a point in her personal life where she was dreading her engagements. In her words, "I repeatedly had trouble dragging myself out of bed on days of I was to deliver a speech. Drat! Do I have to give another motivational talk?" (Morgan, 1996).
