The specific mechanisms of specific language impairment (SLI) in children is not understood, by examining the linkage that may be found in children with a family history of language impairment and assessing the way that the childrens performance at ages 6 - 9 months through to 36 months takes place and how this may link to the emergence of problems in language processing and language development has the potential to add significantly to this area of study. Two main outcomes were noted, that the infants from families where there was a history of SLI has a significantly different means on the tests when compared to the control group where infants from families with no SLI history. Where a poor performance on the initial tests at between the ages of 6 - 9 months this was a strong predictor indicating the way that the study demonstrates a link where auditory processing deficits precede and can be used to predict language delays. The basis of the research is supported by empirical evidence that the development of language is a universal skill found in infants in different cultures, and the way aspects such as phone contrasts can be discriminated and language abilities develop. The languages themselves may be different, but the underlying acquisition processes appear to be the same meaning that where there are delays of difficulties there are likely to be some alternate factors interfering with that acquisition. Assessing how and why delays in language acquisition takes place is an important area of study, it is noted that other authors have found that between 5% and 10% of children starting school will have some type of disorder in their language development.
