for both the person who is dying and for the family members. Existing literature, including the theories of Elizabeth Kubler-Ross (1975), will be integrated into the background information for
this study. Problem The problem that will be addressed in this study is the resistance of the family members of individuals with HIV/AIDS to the impending death
of their family member, and the way their denial, rejection, anger, or other response impacts the death/dying process. This study will look at the way in which people with
HIV/AIDS are perceived by their family members, including the stigmatization of people with AIDS, and will consider the breadth of the problem at a time when the number of people
living with HIV/AIDS worldwide continues to grow (AIDS Weekly Plus, 1997). As the problem continues to impact families, causing illness and death among varied populations (including young children), individual
family dynamics can play a major role in how the process of death/dying is addressed (Kubler-Ross, 1975; Kowalski, 2002; Gallagher, 2000). The problem section of this study will relate the
overall problem of HIV/AIDs, including current statistics about the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in certain populations and the role that stigmatization and family participation plays in the care of these individuals.
This problem statement will also include information about the response of individuals to death, the stages of death, and propose a view of how acceptance and support for death
