The question arises: why be so concerned about a church? Putting aside its great historical significance-the history of Westminster goes back 1000 years-in many ways Westminster Abbey is the symbol of the national soul of England. This is due to a number of factors that stem from its long history and the fact that so many of the countrys rulers, leaders, and artists are buried there. The list of dignitaries whose final resting place is in Westminster is long and varied and adds greatly to its significance in the national consciousness. The burial place of Queen Elizabeth I is in the North Aisle. Elizabeth I lies next to her half-sister, Mary and a white marble effigy bears her likeness. The mortuary chapel of Henry VII projects out of the side of Westminster into the heart of the palace which was the center of English government, seat of law-courts, council chamber and exchequer. (Gun 26) Completed in 1519, Henrys chapel is marvelous. The vaulted roof is an outstanding example of the spectacular Tudor style of architecture. Since 1725, the chapel has been used as the Chapel of the Order of the Bath, so gaily colored banner, crests and mantlings of knights adorn the 16th century wooden stalls.
