one can argue that this symbolism represents many things. For example, we can focus on the Friar in "Romeo and Juliet" and examine how he perhaps felt torn in his
decision to marry Romeo and Juliet from a religious perspective, and thus assisted in the feigned death of Juliet. Or, perhaps one could argue that the play itself was a
criticism on Christianity in some ways, as it was the foundation from which both warring families based their actions. Bearing in mind the possible complexity of religious imagery in "Romeo
and Juliet" the following paper focuses on one particular scene in Romeo and Juliet where figurative language is used in combination with religious content in order to offer us a
symbolic use of religion. The scene to be discussed in Act I Scene V. Figurative Language and Religion In this particular scene, when Romeo and Juliet meet, we
see a great deal of reference to religion and to things that are holy. The encounter begins with Romeo stating, "If I profane with my unworthiest hand/ This holy shrine,
the gentle fine is this:/ My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand/ To smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss" (Shakespeare I v). As we can see his figurative
speech associates her with a shrine, a religious object, and then offers up his lips as pilgrims. Pilgrims often made journeys to holy shrines so that they could worship, and
Romeo is using the notion of his lips being pilgrims so that they may worship the shrine that is actually Juliet. Juliet plays along with this figurative game of
words, replying that "Good pilgrim, you do wrong your hand too much,/ Which mannerly devotion shows in this;/ For saints have hands that pilgrims hands do touch,/ And palm to
