In this short story we see many images that offer us a look at the position of religion in this womans life, and we see an examination of that religion through the eyes of the author, Gustave Flaubert. The following paper examines the role of religion, discussing whether or not Flaubert was praising or mocking religion, whether religion limits her, and what the role of the parrot in all this is as it relates to religion. A Simple Heart Felicity is, above all, far more than a simple heart. She is a simple soul and a simple intellect. She does not have the capacity to truly grasps complex thought or enlightened thought. she does not really have the capacity to develop and grow. We can see this in the following when we see how she has trouble imagining the Holy Spirit, assuming she must "see" it, not just acknowledge its presence: "She had trouble in imagining its shape; for it was not only a bird, but besides that, a fire, and at other times a breath. Maybe it was its light that flickered at nights on the edge of the marshes, its breath that pushed the clouds, its voice that made the bells ring sweetly; and she stayed in adoration, enjoying the freshness of the walls and the tranquillity of the church" (Flaubert III).
